VJ Day Party for Peace
VJ Day was commemorated throughout Leek Town centre with a Party For Peace Celebrating 70 years of peace since WW2 ended. The day started with a remembrance service at the Nicholson Memorial at 11am. Seven standard bearers took part in the proceedings which also included the laying of wreaths by a number of dignitaries followed by the sounding of the all clear.
After the remembrance proceedings came the party celebrations which included performances by Leek Morris Dancers, Black Dog Molly Dancers, The Buxton Billerettes, and the Staffordshire Moorlands Youth Band.
Enhancing the party atmosphere was Charlie Clown, a Punch and Judy Show, face painters, the D-Day Darlings singers and the Moorlands Radio Roadshow.
Families were invited to enjoy a picnic at tables and chairs which had been laid out in the Sparrow Park area of Derby Street, as well as browse stalls and displays hosted by organisations including Leek Rugby Club and local scouts, and there was also a display of military vehicles in place in the traffic-free town centre.
Leek United Building Society provided free refreshments for the partying youngsters, while Leek Town Council Events Committee offered goody bags.
